Choosing a dump trailer
A dump trailer is bought on weight, not on volume. Wet topsoil, stone and demolition debris are heavy enough that most operators reach the axle rating long before the box looks full, so the number that matters is the GVWR and what is left of it once the trailer's own weight is subtracted.
The lift mechanism is the second decision. A single-ram hoist is simpler and cheaper and does most of what a landscaper needs. A scissor lift raises a loaded box more evenly and holds its angle better under a heavy, sticky load. Telescopic cylinders clear the longest boxes. None of them changes what the axles can legally carry.
Gate style follows the material. Barn doors suit rock and rubble that you want to drop in one place. A spreader gate meters gravel and topsoil out in a controlled band as you pull forward.
Questions worth asking first
How much can a dump trailer actually carry?
Subtract the trailer's empty weight from its GVWR and what remains is the payload. A 14,000 lb GVWR trailer that weighs about 4,000 lb empty carries roughly 10,000 lb. Every listing that publishes a GVWR shows it, and we never infer a rating the manufacturer has not published.
Do I need a commercial licence to tow one?
Licensing is set by your state and by the combined weight of truck and trailer, not by us. Check your state DMV against the GVWR on the listing before you buy.
What truck do I need?
Match your truck's tow rating and hitch class to the trailer's loaded weight, not to its empty weight. A half-ton pickup handles most 7,000 lb trailers; 14,000 lb models generally want a three-quarter-ton or heavier.
